Sukpatch ‎- That's Leona's Business (1991)

26 musical pieces on this cassette released by Toytown in Australia. The lo-fi artistic statement seems to be that the tracklist is only indicative. And so are cassette sides! Joke aside, there are indeed 17 songs (the longer tracks), the rest are short samples and jingles in between tracks.

I also scanned and enclosed some Toytown catalogues for you to read while you listen to these pop gems. For a cassette the sound is actually pretty good and the recordings are not that lo-fi.

Slowdive - Live in Eindhoven (1993)

Ok, I'm going to bore you one last time with my sketchy memories, which are only a quarter of a century old but I already feel like grampa Simpson. This time with Slowdive, who coincidentally have reunited and are going on tour again. I saw the band only once, at the Oxford Poly in late 1991 (couldn't find a date online but I still have the setlist grabbed from the stage so it wasn't just a dream). They played loud and fast then, with classic songs like Slowdive or Avalyn barely recognizable. Some raw energy that their first album completely lacked in my opinion.

Artist: Slowdive
City: Eindhoven
Venue: De Effenaar
Date: October 13th, 1993

Tracklist:

01: Intro
02: Machine Gun
03: (technical problems)

Cranes - Live in Amsterdam (1991)

Cranes was a band that I was lucky to see twice early in their career. The first time was at the Futurama festival in Deinze (Belgium) in November 1990. I only have faint memories of that day but I do remember Starblood at the end of the set, with the drumsticks bouncing one last time before landing in the audience. Despite the excellent line-up of the festival - Ride, the Telescopes, Revenge, Northside - I don't recall much of that day. I just remember that I saw Peter Hook, that Northside had one good song and that we left early, missing the closing sets of Crime and the City Solution and World Party. Cranes was definitely the highlight of the day for me.

I caught up with Cranes a year later, at a club on Cowley Road in Oxford (UK). If Google is to be believed the club was called The Venue and the date was September 1991. I could have sworn that it was at a later date but maybe my mind is confused by the fact that in 1992 I lived for a few months just around the corner on St. Mary's Road. They played a quiet set, quieter than the one I saw a year earlier and than the one posted here, with Alison complaining about the constant chatter that was disrupting the show (and it was indeed annoying).

Artist: Cranes
City: Amsterdam
Venue: Paradiso
Date: February 22nd, 1991

Tracklist:

01: Intro
02: Sixth Of May
03: Focus Breathe
04: E.G. Shining

Lush - Live in Utrecht (1990)

Lush is one of those bands that I regret never seeing play live. I almost did go see them at a 4AD showcase at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels (Belgium) in April 1990. But for some silly reason I couldn't go and instead gave my ticket away to a friend of mine (who thankfully taped the whole thing, including the Pale Saints set). Still, a live recording will never make up for the actual live show. I got to see the Pale Saints a few months later at the Brielpoort in Deinze when they toured with the Pixies, but me and Lush sadly never crossed path again. The nice picture above is taken from the very comprehensive fansite Lush Remembered: Light from a Dead Star.
